Terry started skiing
at the age of two and started competing in tournaments at age ten
under the guidance and coaching of his father, Ray Huber. His dad
was the driving force behind him getting stung by the skiing bug
early in life. Terry's father would wake him up at 5:30 in the
morning as a youngster to practice. Most mornings, Terry would
tell him he would rather stay in bed but his father was quick to
reply that Champions aren't born in bed. That was all the
encouragement he would need to get him out to practice on many
early mornings.
Terry was lucky to have
grown up on Pine Lake in LaPorte, Indiana where his grandfather
had purchased property an the early 1900's . Terry's father, Ray,
started the Correct Craft Promotional Program in the late 1960's
and because of his relationship with Correct Craft, the family was
given a new boat to use every year from 1966 through 1982. Terry's
family skied so much that they installed a 500 gallon gas tank
at their house and ran a gas line to the end of their boat dock.
Terry skied in his first state tournament in 1964 and at the age
of eleven placed first in the Junior Boys and Boys Slalom Division
every year from 1967 through 1973.
