The Mark Wiggs Memorial Jump
Trophy was first presented by The Webster Ski Bees in 1973.
It was the result of a tragic fatal accident that occurred the
previous year at a ski show at Webster Lake. Mark Wiggs was a
good jumper who always placed well in competition and had been
demonstrating kite skiing with an early Delta wing kite at
this ski show. He was about 1,000 feet in the air with his
kite when a sudden storm came up producing strong and gusting
winds. He rode down to about 400 feet then free fell into
about 8 feet of water. It was a terrible and devastating
accident. The Webster Ski Bees were a very active ski club at
that time and records show that their team dominated the state
tournament during the years of 1965-1974.
Their club wanted
to honor and remember Mark Wiggs and his love of jumping. The
criteria for being awarded this trophy now include having the
longest jump at the Indiana State Tournament and not winning
this more than once during a five year period. The trophy
stays with the winning jumper for the year and then goes to
the new winner at the state tournament.
