2007 Season Highlights

Familiar Faces
|
Imagine traveling along Northern Indiana and coming
across a local Steuben County magazine and a water skier on the cover gets
your attention. After you look a little closer you realize - Hey I know that
Guy, Yup - It's Chuck Walker, who's a member of The Angola Water Ski
Entertainment Club in Angola on the cover of Steuben County's information
magazine located all over Northern Indiana. After looking through the
magazine just for the heck of it go to the county's web site
www.lakes101.com and who do you see there??

IWSA's own

done articals on the club.

for several years now (it came from another
article in the same magazine). Tom adds - "Last summer I was on the cover and
they did a story about our club. Had some tricking and some jumping shots as
well. I think the picture is about 7 years ago. It is my old Goode ski, the
brown shorts have long been retired, but the vest is still going strong (just
use a yellow paper clip on the zipper now!)"

Dick West
- IWSA Hall of Fame Inductee
|
Here IWSA's 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee
, Dick West is presented with his award from presenter John Kniesly. Dick
was a very insperational part of getting organized water skiing up and
running through out the state. Dick started skiing in 1947 and took off
across the northern part of the state visiting all the lakes in Indiana
trying to get tournaments and shows started across the state. Dick took the
podium for a short speech to explain his efforts in trying to send the
message of organized water skiing in the days when there was snail mail and
we didn't enjoy the benefits of e-mail and the internet as we enjoy today.

07' Fall IWSA Meeting

The first fall IWSA board meeting took place Saturday the
7th, along with many accomplishments "John Kniesly and Carl Truesdale
presented a check to IWSA President Dan Custer for $4,983. Carl and John were
the motivating forces behind the National Handicapped Tournament held this
summer at Hawthorne Lake near Danville, Indiana. Through their efforts at
fund raising and organization, a surplus of money from the fund was divided 3
ways between Hawthorne Lake, Rehabilitation Hospital and IWSA which received
the extra proceeds. Hats off to these two fellows and all of the other
volunteers who contributed to this acclaimed event.
JOB WELL DONE!

Big Dawgs Go Early
While battling some 30 mph winds and what was becoming close to white cap water
conditions for Sundays final rounds of skiing at the 34 mph Big Dawg
Slalom Championships in Winter Garden Florida, none of the Indiana Big Dawgs
made it to the final 8. While Kim Contos didn't make the sweet 16 for Sundays
rounds Chris Clark and Scott Tynan were seated 12th and 8th respectively after
Saturdays performances. Talk about close performances, Scott's best was 5 1/2 at
39 and Chris was a buoy back with 4 1/2 at 39 after Saturday. Chris went out
first against Todd Johnson, Todd left the door wide open for Chris as he scored
3 at 38 off. Chris biffed it at one ball at 38 shattering his dreams of making
the elite 8 where the money starts paying for placements. A bit later Scott went
out first against Clay Neill and scored 4 buoys at 39 in the adverse winds, only
to have Clay pass him by a buoy to knock Scott out of the money rounds as well.
This is a big accomplishment to even get invited to such a prestigious event and
ski with the best of the best that came from 3 different countries and 17
different states to compete in this years Finals. Congratulations to Kim, Chris
and Scott for their efforts in the Big Dawg series this year. Your still the
elite three in Indiana and we wish you well in 08.

9/16/07 Final Tourny
- Sawmill Fall Record
As usual, the crew at Sawmill Lake
near Columbus, Indiana poured out the hospitality to nearly 40 skiers on
Saturday, September 14th. The day started out a bit chilly but developed
into a picture perfect day with plenty of sun and very little wind.
Barb-b-q and all the fixin's at the Jackson dock/boathouse capped a fun filled
day. This wraps up the tournament season in Indiana. So this is a great
time to fill out
this form
and nominate your favorite skier of the year for recognition at the IWSA

Record - Nate Smith

Boys 3 National Slalom Champion, Nate Smith, ran 38 off again. This time at
the Timberlake Pick &Choose where he rounded 2 @ 39.5 off. This breaks the
Midwest all Tournament Record. His 2 buoys @ 39 at Nationals set the "
Record Tournament" Record, as those can be achieved out of region, but the
regional all tournament (class C and up) records must be in the Mid West region.

9/08/07 Labor
Day
The folks at Cindonway Shores rolled
out the red carpet to approximately 34 skiers. Two sections of NSL
event skiers enjoyed 4 pulls per event racking up points for trophies and
awards. Two additional groups of USA Water Skiers competed for
points for the new ranking system in place. Everything went well
until Peggy Bucher brought out her prize-winning Lasagna and salad. All of
a sudden the Bucher porch was full of people eating. The hospitality was
unmatched, the weather was perfect (a bit windy), and the
fun/comrade was enjoyed by all. Two more tournaments the next two
weekends. submitted by Dave Jarrett Pics are

Wins Gold at Worlds
IWSA's Pan Am Judge Tom Danford has been in LINZ Austria
appointed to work the Water Ski World Tournament. The U.S. Elite Water Ski Team
clinched its fourth consecutive world team title Sunday as the 2007 Water Ski
World Championships concluded. The biennial event, which began Tuesday, included
more than 120 athletes from 40 countries.
Here's a note from Tom after the final event.
|
All,
You may already know the outcome, but
I had the great pleasure to watch Freddy from the boat become the 2008
WORLD JUMP CHAMPION!! What a class act! Jaret put him to the
test with a 232 and after a first jump to feel out the set up he came
back on #2 landing just shy of his current World Record, which was just
approved here in Linz, with a 238!
His address my be in FL, but his roots
are in the MidWest!! ( Illinios) All of the Midwest’s hats are off to
you! Way to go Freddy!!!
Team USA won the gold by one of the
slimmest of margins … less than 20 points … a real nail biter right down
to the end. All details at

Thanks,
Tom |

9/03/07 Champion
Lake Slalom Saturday
This has been the 3rd or 4th time this regional record has gone down this season
alone. Mason Mechler a boys 2 slalom skier from Ohio and IWSA's own Sam Jackson
have been trading this record all season and Sam took the upper edge this past
weekend at the off again,on again Champion Lake 3 rd slalom running 5 @ 35off.
The tournament at Champion Lake had cancelled the trick and jump portion cause
of a threat of low water. Congratulations to Sam..

8/18/07 B'ster
vs. Sponge Bob
|
It was another close encounter at the
65th Goode Water Ski Nationals in Bakersfield California, like the state
tournament these two riggers were neck and neck in the jump event. This time
Briant Detty came out in front with a 100 footer good enough for the 4th place
medal, and right behind him on his heels was Andrew Schmitt with a 97 footer for
the 5th place spot on the podium. B'ster slalomed into the 14th place spot
and placed 20th in tricks to give him the 3rd place overall medal. Andy was 27th
in slalom and 6th in tricks and brought home the 4th place overall medal.
Congrats to you both.....

8/14/07 Clark
vs. Tynan
Anyone that has been around slalom skiing in Indiana knows
the chase that
Chris Clark has been on to give Scott Tynan a run for his money in
the slalom event. After many State and Big Dawg tournaments later, Chris pulled
one out at the 65th Goode Water Ski Nationals in Bakersfield California Monday
afternoon. Finally all the wishing, the ribbing and smack talk between the two
has finally swung in Chris's favor. Chris ran an incredible 5 buoys at 39 off
for a 3rd place medal. Scott who would of skied after Chris skied an incredible
3 buoys at 39 off for 5th place in the Masters Men's
55K
slalom event. I'm sure it was a nail bitter and can't wait to
hear the rest of the story.
Other notables so far is Tom Danford - who had won the
Overall title last year, took a 3rd place finish in Tricks and was a mere 45
points from the overall race to settle for secord.. There are many Mid Western
skiers in the medal count this year with most of the kids events yet to go.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
8/10/07 Andrew
Schmitt
Congratulations to Andrew Schmitt as he was selected to
represent the mid west with the Junior All-star team at next weeks Water Ski
Nationals. Andrew will ski representing the Mid West Jr. Team with other team
skiers -
Elizabeth Montavon (IL) Girls 2 - Alison Lindy (MN) Girls 3 - Mason Mechler (OH)
Boys 2 - Tyler Lorenz (WI) Boys 3 - Zack Schneider (OH) Boys 2 , and
congratulations to Nate Smith for being chosen as an alternate.

8/09/07 Team
Scores By State at Regionals
AT the Mid West Regionals each year they tally team scores by
state just like they do team scores by affiliated club at our state tournament.
This year the team scores were close with Indiana taking 3rd place over ILL. and
Ohio. Illinois won the title for the second year in a row with 13,470, Ohio was
2nd with 12,750 and Indiana was 3rd with 12,229 points. Rounding out the top 5
were Minnesota with 10,577 points and hosting state Kansas with 10,183 points.
What do you suppose would happen if everyone skied that was eligible ?
? Who's in ? ?

The
Lake City Skiers are celebrating their 2nd consecutive 1st place

the spectators of the area. They showed the town why they were the first place
finishers with another excellent performance. Now that
they have their second
1st place finish in as many years, they will have to bump up and perform with
the Division 1

The Lake City Skiers won top awards for showmanship, sound crew, high
individual club act, jumping and barefooting. They also won the team

weather and skiing conditions on Wednesday, June 6th. Thursday, June
7th brought 40 miles per hour winds and 90 degree heat, but that didn't
phase the enthusiasm of numerous water |

skiers and family members. This event
couldn't happen without the many volunteers from local hospital programs,
IWSA members, local ski club members, local boat dealers, and many more.
Many Many thanks to all. More pics

Spring Fling
The annual
INDIANA WATER SKI ASSOCIATION'S SPRING FLING was held on Sunday, June 3rd.
The weatherman cooperated and the crowd was enthusiastic. Twenty water
skiers and fourteen wakeboarders enjoyed the smooth waters of the host
Fairland Ski Club. Boat displays by Supra of Anderson, Pinecrest
Marine, and Morse Lake Indboards were enjoyed by all. Skier's Edge
sold their wares to customers and offered a USA Water Ski discount.
Mike Baker tried out the new "Headset" unit recently purchased by
IWSA. Fairland Ski Club members Jeff Rash, Mark Powers, and Gary Bauman
flipped burgers and dogs for participants and their families. Special
thanks to Gary and Ryan Bauman for providing a tow boat for the skiers.
Thanks to John Warne and Doug Hobson who pulled several skiers with their
brand new Malibu and to Chris Walker who pulled all the wakeboarders with a
new Supra. Several members from Ski Klub of Indianapolis helped man
the registration desk and provided instruction in the towboat. The
most awesome performance was by Clark Becker wakeskating! (see

Indiana Connection
USA Waterski's official publication, The Water Skier, has had
a lot of interest from Indiana skiers with every issue this year. In January we
read about the great things Dave Jarrett has done heading up all our NSL events
and the great things that go on at Fairland. Then last month we read a great
story about the no.1 ranked Men's 3 slalom skier, Scott Tynan. Now this month,
who's on the cover? Cale Burdick, talking about his desire to win his 3rd
collegiate slalom title. It's nice to catch up with the locals in this
nationally published magazine. |

05/03/07 Getting
Started
There has been a number of skiers getting antsy for the
season to get started. There has been clubs with work parties as well as
short ski sessions anxious to get the season under way. I'm sure the southern
clubs have been at it for a while, but up here in the north things are
still a bit breezy but the lakes are starting to look more like a places to ski.
SO remember when you get your equipment out and find out your dry suit has the
neck ripped out of it, or go to put that wet suit on for the first time and it
seems to have shrunk a few sizes don't forget to check your supporting local
dealers first. Please support your supporting local dealers
here.
Mike Baker takes his first cuts of the season at Fairland. |
