2010 Year Review

Cover Fame
|
We were stoked when we found out our 2nd ever IWSA
member Scott Tynan was on the cover of the latest issue of the Water Skier
magazine, But they did it again. When you receive your next issue Nate
Smith will be the third ever to make the magazine cover. What's even odder
is not only the fact that Nate makes it the second cover in a row for an
IWSA member to grace it's cover but the two train and ski together too.
Now what are the odds of that. Congratulations to Nate and his many
accomplishments of last season.

Noah Vieke
Noah was recently spotted in West Palm at Okeeheelee Park in Florida
taking part in their Radar Demo Day and Night Ski which took place Nov.
13th. Noah was chosen as
IWSA's Slalom Skier Of The Year at this years
IWSA's
Awards Banquet for 1st place finishes in Men's 1 slalom at the
Midwest Regionals and the U.S. National Championships. Noah resides in the
southern state in our off season to attend full time college classes which
explains his absence form the Awards Banquet. Since the weather in the
south at night is cooling off Lou Thomas was the only other skier that
took part with Noah in the night portion of the event.

The Uglies
The ugly side of
water skiing! As the weather gets colder the realization that the water ski
season is coming to an end. This means the winterization of local water ski
courses. Now we realize who the really dedicated ski club members are! Ski
Klub of Indy and Fairland Ski Club members and workers removed their courses
and docks on October 24th. Fairland members decided to take advantage of low
water to remove and work on some of their tire islands. The famous "Fairland
Island" is showing a couple of feet above the water level. Indy Skiers at
White River hung on for one more week removing their course on October 30th.
The Indy skiers have the biggest challenge due to their course being in a
river. Every buoy, all PVC arms, and cable course must be completely removed
from the river. Quite a dirty job! Indy skiers also decided to meet the
challenge of installing a surveyed course on their October 30th work day. The
wind gave a good contest but it was the looser against this group of dedicated
skiers.

The Banquet Files
Wine and Cheese
135 members and their families came together at the
8th Annual Awards Dinner
Banquet for one last outing before the snow flies.
definatly the largest get together yet, the night started by sending the old
season out with the annual Wine and Cheese Party where everyone congregates
together to chat about the past and up coming seasons. After the Wine and Cheese
Party everyone took their seats in the dining room where a short general
membership meeting took place. The meeting was constructive in building the tournament season schedule for the
2010 season as well as your new slate of IWSA
officers. All the details from
that meeting will come in the months to come as details get finalized.
Then it was announced that
Hawthorn
Lake
in Danville won the bid to host the 2011 Indiana

Magazine & Nate Smith
|
Nate Smith gets an interview with Waterski Magazines Trent Finlayson.
While we all know Nate is a great kid and a real deal, the water ski world
seams to be in shock with his accomplishments. Getting some gruff on
message boards is nothing new but Nate just uses that for fuel. Read the
whole interview at Waterski Mag online

10/04/10 Nate Smith
Is At It Again
|
Nate Smith just did it again. As you may be aware he
has broke the Mid West Slalom Record 3 times this season alone, and now
upped it again. Nate attended a tournament at Little Mountain Lake in
North Carolina. The weekend was going well, Off the dock Nate ran his 35
off, took 39 off in a tail, 41 off head wind and stood up to score 1 @ 43.
Nate happens to be the youngest skier to ever run the pass and is only 1
of 6 in the world to ever run the 41 loop. And if your keeping track of
how many skis Nate's been on this year, you can see in the picture he
rides another. |

have conducted this event every Thursday night. In addition, their "Learn

9/09/10 Purdue Ski
Jump
Collegiate Water Skiers now have a new place to jump in Indiana. The
Purdue Water Ski Club is pleased to announce that they have successfully
put their new jump into service at Lake Purdue. After two years of fund
raising, the goal was finally met. The jump was assembled in New Jersey
by Ed Wiley, president of the Purdue Water Ski Team, and then it was
trucked to Purdue in pieces. In the weeks before the school year
started, ski team members assembled the ramp and put it in place. Having
their own jump to use for practice is a luxury that most collegiate ski
teams do not get to enjoy and it will not go unappreciated at Purdue.
Thanks to everyone involved in Indiana Waterskiing that has helped over
the years. Boiler Up!

|
The Duke Energy 21st Disabled Water Ski Nationals and
2nd Pan Am Games which was hosted in conjunction with IWSA, Hawthorn Lake
and RHI Sports went off with out a hitch. Many thanks go out to the
officials and volunteers that made this national event a great success.
Thanks to the many IWSA family members that came out to support the event
each day with helping hands in various areas to make the event run even
more smoothly. I can't say enough of the efforts from Carl Truesdale, John
Kniesley, Bill Roach, Brian Detty, DeeDee Tucker and the whole Hawthorn
Ski Club, (and many many more) have done to put together one of the
biggest events in the state and have it run as smoothly as it has. With
the 2 world records and
the
addition of the clinic, the AB skiers (Nate Smith, wow!) and the smack
down (Joe Ray the winner, sort of) only added to the enjoyment.
From the Reception Party on Wed. night through the awards banquet
after the days festivities on Saturday were certainly a class act. I have
received many letters of thanks and of appreciation of the weeks efforts
from various participants. Your dedication doesn't go unrecognized. Thanks
for making the the Duke Energy 21st Disabled Nationals the great event it
should be.

As usual the folks at Silent Shores put on a first

Smith who upped the Mid West Open Mens Record Tournament Slalom Record to
2 @ 41 off earlier in the season,

skied an incredible 2.5 @ 41 at the Open session at the

8/17/10 Barefoot Buckethead
Endurance Race
|
A new discipline of barefoot waterskiing has evolved,
called barefoot endurance racing. Six teams from Indiana traveled to the
Maumee River in Ohio to compete in a 38 mile barefoot endurance challenge.
19 miles up river and 19 miles back. Many competitors came from all over
for this event with the winning team from Houston, TX (Top Gun) with a
winning time in the 1 hour range. Each team consists of four or five
competitors that will each have to participate in a rotation during the
race and the rotation continues until you are finished. 13 teams started
this challenge and 13 teams finished. The event had a record number for
boats |
 |
starting the challenge. The emphasis of this event is fun. Indiana had
a great presence in this event with six of the 13 teams. Several
familiar faces participated. The teams were Shattered Glass from
Warsaw, Team Nutz Angola, Snow Lake Schleppers Angola, The Wolfpack
Indianapolis, Top Gut, Indianapolis and Captains Reality, (Indianapolis
plus Ohio, Wisconsin and northern Indiana). More pics are

8/15/10 Indy Open at
Precedent
|
It was hot in Indiana but it was hotter at the Precedent Office Park at
the "Indy Open" on August 14th and 15th. Smooth water and large crowds
spurred the water skiers and wakeboarders on at this Grassroots level
event. Plenty of vendors, trophies, cash prizes, gift certificates, and
just plain fun made this event a great success.

8/15/10 Day 7
On the last day of the water ski nationals with only a few events left
brought on yet a few more IWSA members to a podium finish.
Chris Clark finished 3rd in the Masters Men slalom event with a
score of 2 at 39 off.
Jenna Gilbert continues her realm. Jenna who tied for first place
in women's 1 slalom by rounding 1 ball at 35 off at the mid west
regional tournament and went on to win after the tie breaker skied a
half buoy at 35 off to place fourth at the national championships.
Mason Sharkey who made a come back this year in his men's 1 trick
event landed himself one place off the podium with a finish of 6th while
brother Jared finished 11th.
Congratulations to the Waters Edge Ski Club for their success in

8/13/10 Day 5 &6 Nationals Results
It's hard to report every skier at that has attended the 68thGoode Water
Ski Nationals, I wish I could. Not to leave anyone out but here's a few
more highlights that stand out.
Lake Clark skied his Personal Best rounding 2 at 32 off in Boy's
3 for 22 place. That's incredible to do at a tournament such as the
nationals.
Clay Schmitt tied his PB in tricks with a score of 1150 then PB'd
in Slalom in Boys 3 as well with a score of 1.5 at 32 off. That finished
Clay at 17th in his Overall score, while his mother Cheryl Schmitt
finished 5th in Women's 5 jump.
Briant Detty posted his personal best in jump breaking the 150
foot barrier with a leap of 152 which earned him in 3rd place finish.
B'ster Detty and Sam Jackson have gone back and forth with
their slalom skiing. But what are the odds that they would tie for 7th
place out of 47 skiers in boy's 3 slalom at the nationals with a score
of 5 @ 35 off? That landed B'ster just off the podium with 6th place
overall and Andrew Schmitt finished 14th.
Noah Vieke - Just a few short years ago Noah was attending learn
to ski clinics and grassroots events. This year he takes top spot in
Men's 1 slalom at the Nationals with a score of
4.5@38 off.
Same story with Matt Irmscher who finished respectively 7th with
a score of
1.5@38 off.
Molly Harrison tricked her way to 2nd place in women's 1 with a
score of 3070 points.
Nate Smith didn't leave anyone disappointed with his performance
of 1 at 41 off which landed him in a run off situation for 4th and 5th.
Nate finished 5th while home town favorite Cale Burdick finished
7th in Open Men.
Stay tuned. a lot of great skiing with another big day to go. catch all
the results

8/10/10 Nationals Results
There's a lot of skiing to catch up on since things have been out of
service. I will have to skip the regionals and get right to the
nationals. Which the regionals was one of the biggest regionals ever
while participants were down just 20 skiers there were more amount of
pulls than ever before. Which means more skiers are skiing for overall
score. - Here's those
results, . I will have to build the state results page later. There
has been a lot of great skiing from our Indiana folks, I wish I could
post them all but here's some highlights. Send some pictures or your
stories if you have one.
After three days of skiing at the 68th Goode Water Ski National
Championships in Wilmington Illinois. Competition started Sunday the 8th
and here's just a few highlights so far.
The Tynan Duo has became a Trifecta. Scott took first in slalom
in men's 3 with 1.5 @ 41 off. Emma the new national competitor of the
family finished 10th in slalom, and Liz, is yet to ski, she'll ski Wed.
The Contos duo is at it again. Kim finished in a three way tie
for first with a score of 2@39, and finished 2nd in Men's 5, while Casey
finished third with 3@38 just a buoy and a half behind the leader.
John Kniesley finished a respectable 12th with
1@38 off. Men's 2 tricks saw Brian
Zimmer finish 5th with 2910 points. Nicholas Shedd went 3@28
for 17th place in Boy's 2 slalom and 25th in tricks with 820 points.
Men's 3 slalom is a tough event. While Brian Dawson goes
4@38 off in men's 3 his finish is a 5
way tie for 17th. Which is the same result for Paul Goldman's
same score in Men's 4. Tom Danford who is running the show as
Chief Judge for the US event scored 3270 points in tricks for a second
place podium finish and finished 9th with his overall score. Cameron
Wischmeyer of Sawmill Lake is building another champion as he
finished 7th in Boy's 2 slalom. These are just a few highlights with
plenty of skiing to go. for updated results click

Tournament. At 19 years old Nate qualified as a challenger in this
weekends Global Invitational Water Ski Tournament in Allendale Michigan,
Nate's first pro tournament event. Nate came out in the early round and
set the pace with a score of 2 at 41 off. That score would put him in the
brackets for the finals and a 6th seed. Nate then continued his
consistency and found himself in the final round going head to head with
Will Asher. Nate continued his consistency with 1 at 41 while Will Asher
would round a few more for the victory. Congratulations to Nate for a job
well done. Last |

Lake Meski Flood
All the rain in the
area didn't fair well with
Lake Meski,
the Plainfield Ski Club site. The site is in total devastation after a levee
broke causing severe flooding. Lost was one boat, all docks and structures,
hoping to salvage the ski jump. Here's a few pics.

Sawmill Spring Record
Spectators don't
have to go the the "Protour" event to see top skiers in action! Just go to
Sawmill Lake near Columbus, Indiana and witness top-notch water skiing. Two
skiers, Scott Tynan of Sawmill Lake and Nate Smith of Champion Lake both
completed 2 balls @ 41' off at Saturday's Tournament. Many other skiers were
close behind. Mother Nature blessed the area with a 2.5 inch rain storm at
4:00 AM on tournament day but that didn't affect the skiing.

Grassroots Tournamant at Ski Klub of Indy
High water and
lots of rollers didn't stop participants in the Ski Klub of Indianapolis
Grassroots Tournament on June 20th from having a good time! Recent storms
have water levels at both Fairland and Shelbyville at record water levels.
Skiers exhibited lots of patience between runs allowing the rollers to
subside. Some skiers tried alternative methods....one skier did the slalom
course on trick skiis! T-shirts and goodie bags furnished by USA Water Ski
were given to all skiers. Trophies for different categories and
performances were also awarded.

Chase McCain Update
Chase
arrived in Panama City Beach Florida the first of the year after he
completed Navy boot camp and pre-dive school at Great Lakes Naval Base
north of Chicago. Of the 26 students that started only 6 made it and
Chase was one of them! Chase graduated on May 18th and is officially a
Navy Diver. After spending a few weeks at home Chase was off to his
dream job living in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii for the next 3 years.
He got the
job he wanted and is a member of "SDVTEAM1" which stands for - seal
delivery vehicle team one. His job/team consists of approx 30 Navy
Seals and 10 Navy Divers. A seal delivery vehicle looks like a small
submarine that carries 2 Navy Seals to a mission and is deployed from
a full size submarine in the pacific ocean. For more info on SDV's
check out this web site:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ylMOtRveeE&feature=related
As a Navy Diver
on the team Chase will be trained to maintain, deploy and assist seals with
their mission using an SDV (Chase is sort of like the "pit crew").
Chase is doing
well, he really likes Hawaii, his new base and is a natural at surfing!

Monday Night Ski
|
The
Monday Night
Ski League series got off to a great start at Champion
Lake on Monday, June 14th. We skied in between storms from 5:00 pm until
8:30 PM on the calm before and after the storms. Thanks to Kevin Smith
for driving the entire evening and more thanks to
Champion
Lake residents for donating boats and lake time.
Several owners came down and made us all feel welcome. The east end of
Champion Lake is undergoing some changes. The starting shed is gone but
materials are on site to rebuild and the Wood's house at the east end of
the lake has several hundreds of new boulders decorating the landscape!

Cindonway Fun Tournament
|
Besides a brief rain shower between rounds the weather was perfect for
skiing Saturday while sixteen competitors came to battle for trophies at
Indiana's first Grassroots Tournament of the season held at Cindonway
Shores in Syracuse. All competitors left with t-shirts and awards and were
treated with food from the grill as the day came to an end.

Disabled Clinics
|
The weatherman cooperated on June
9th and 10th for the annual Rehabilitaion Hospital of Indiana's
Handicapped Water Ski Clinics. Sunny Skies and warm water made the event
especially enjoyable for all involved. Special thanks to the 30-40
volunteers and helpers who worked this event. Pinecrest Marine and
N3boatworks supplied towboats for the event. This was the 16th year for
this event that began with cooperation between RHI and John Kniesly.
There have been numerous pictures of this event published over the years
of special skiers but today has one of the most touching to me. You'll
recognize a very special 22 year old Brandon in the photos. Don't feel
sorrow for this bright young man. What |

he lacks in arms
and legs is overshadowed by his positive attitude, enthusiasm and goals for
the future. Images are posted

Spring Fling
'Twas a bit windy
but that didn't curb the enthusiasm of everyone who attended the IWSA Spring
Fling held at Fairland Ski Club on June 6th, 2010. As some of the pictures
suggest, it wasn't your standard water ski tournament. Beginner skiers on
the boom, slashed bouys, ropes around props, and surfing added a lot of
variety to the events of the day! , Special thanks to Indy Skiers Reeda and
Dan Stone for managing food and drinks, to Pinecrest Marine for bringing
Mastercrafts to the event, to Chris Walker and Aqua Marine of Anderson for
supplying the Supra wakeboard boat, and to Ski Klub of Indy members for
opening up their facility for afternoon water skiers when things were too
busy at fairland, and to John Kniesly for cleaning the latrines! Images of

Ski Club Gossip
The Central
Indiana water ski clubs are coming to life with the recent warm weather.
Fairland
Ski Club has been skiing since April. Recent work on the tire
islands and docks have Fairland in great shape for the
Spring
Fling on Sunday, June 6th. SKI (Ski
Klub of Indy) at Shelbyville have also been skiing for a
couple of months but this week's warm weather has brought out the members to
both work and ski. SKI will be hosting afternoon skiers at the Spring Fling
and a
Grassroots
Tournament later in June. Indy Skiers had their "clean-up-day"
on Saturday, May 22nd. Attempts to install the ski course in White River
failed due to fast moving current but dock and site preparation was
completed. Click pics

Judges & Scorers Clinic
|
We had 6 IWSA
members take advantage of our judges & scorers clinic held at Hawthorn
lake on 5/1/10. Many thanks to Bill & Dee Dee Tucker for making their home
available for the clinic. Tom Danford served as instructor and had to
travel down from Angola to serve. Huge Thank You to Tom – as usual, he did
a commendable job. We also tested 3 people for upgrades: 1 to Regular
Slalom, 1 to Regular Trick, and 1 to Senior Slalom judge. IWSA is proud to
be able to provide top quality clinics such as this one run by 2010 Chief

Update From Timberlake
The families of
Timberlake are excited to host the
61st
Indiana Water Ski Tournament! We are
looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Our goal at
Timberlake has always been to conduct our tournaments as efficiently as
possible giving our guests their best skiing experience. Many State
state records have been broken at our
site. We look forward to seeing others fall this year.
Timberlake is one of the best ski sites for
watching great skiing! There are plenty of grassy areas to place your lawn
chair or blanket. Speakers are set up along the north side of the lake to
keep you informed as the tournament progresses. Concessions will be on site
during the tournament to quench your thirst and satisfy hunger both days.
Experience Southern Hospitality at its best!
Once again we will be using the Fairfield Inn
Evansville-West as the tournament hotel. We were able to block rooms for $74
per night which includes a complimentary breakfast. They also offer free high
speed wireless internet, an indoor pool, and exercise room. Saturday
night’s banquet will be held at this hotel.
Timberlake
also offers primitive camping.
We’ve been promised St. Philips’ Peaches at
tournament time, as long as Mother Nature cooperates and remembers that spring
temperatures need to stay above freezing.
We look forward to see you in July! Look for
an info page on this event soon !

2010 Schedule
The
2010 Schedule
is close to being finalized. Don't miss the

the region for kids with a day just geared for beginners and a day for
advanced skiers with two qualified instructors who work great with kids. This

been slowly changing to Grassroots. The
Grassroots Schedule is fuller than it has ever been. There's
8

Tournaments for beginner skiers to get the feel of skiing in
a tournament environment without the pressure of big competition.
Something new is the
Monday Night Travel League. These Dates give you a chance to
ski other sites, Fun instructional passes for all abilities, specially for
beginners who want to try the slalom course at other sites.
The
Trick Clinic has new energy behind it pushing to bring trick
skiing back to the realms of three event skiing.

this clinic teaches the basics of first aid as well as American Red Cross

ICEMAN becomes SNOWMAN!
Bryan Dougherty
accomplished water skiing for his 21st straight month today. (1-25-2010) The
lake froze over on January 2nd and Bryan went into depression thinking that
his monthly ski record would be broken. The lake ice broke up late Sunday
allowing Bryan to make plans for skiing today....blowing sleet/snow couldn't
stop him! His only problem with the ski run was that his goggles 'iced up'
making visibility difficult." Click a pick for a larger view.

The IWSA Board will meet this Sat.
at 9:00am at the Avon School Administration Building. So if you want to shake
things up drop an

a note and let them know what's on your mind. We'll welcome any ideas to get
this season rolling.

1/24/10
Columbus Sports Complex
Columbus IN, just south of
Indianapolis, are in the process of building an indoor/outdoor sports complex
to accommodate 4 baseball diamonds and soccer fields. In order to make this
happen they need to move dirt to build up the land. That's when some folks at
Sawmill Lake got involved and presented the idea that if they need to move
that much soil, why not build ski lakes. How about three of them? This will
make the area attractive to huge water ski events such as the US Water Ski
Nationals and other big events drawing big crowds to the Columbus area. Even
though the process of this project has been moving along slowly, individuals
like Scott Tynan and John Cord- who was the back bone of Sawmill Lake along
with the support of IWSA and USA Water Ski are working with the cities
planning of the complex. Kirk Johannesen has written a full report of the
complex and it's effect on the area at:

Ice Man - at it again
|
Well....he's still at it! Bryan Dougherty is the
determined skier continuing his once a month Indiana ski sessions. He
accomplished his "December Ski" on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009. (Time
was running out!) It took two men one hour to break a path through the
ice to the main body of Sweetwater Lake. Once there, Bryan swept the snow
aside, donned his skiis, and yelled "hit it" for a trip down the lake.
Bryan has skied 20 consecutive months in Indiana. For images of the his
