The Banquet Files
Wine and Cheese
131 members and their families came together at the
9th Annual Awards Dinner Banquet. The night started with the annual Wine and Cheese Party where everyone congregates
together to chat about the past and up coming seasons. After the Wine and Cheese
Party everyone took their seats in the dining room where a short general
membership meeting took place. The meeting was constructive in building the tournament season schedule for the
2012 season as well as your new slate of IWSA
officers. All the details from
that meeting will come in the months to come as details get finalized.
Then it was announced that
Angola Ski Club
in Angola won the bid to host the 2012 Indiana
State Tournament.
Dinner
Next the guests were treated to a delicious dinner at the Primo's Banquet
facility in Plainfield. After dinner the awards presentation started with
our new inductees to the IWSA Hall of Fame.
Hall of Fame Inductees - Rollie Williams, Terry Huber and Jerry Hickman
|
Three new inductees into Indiana's
Hall of Fame were
honored. Rollie Williams was the first to be inducted to the Hall of fame.
Rollie has since passed and his son who resides in Tampa Florida was in
attendance to receive the award in his honor. Rollie WIlliams was an inspiration
to all in the earliest of days when skiing was first getting organized in the
state. He was admired by many with his enthusiasm to get others involved and was
a big part in the development of the Indiana State Water Ski Club. There is an
award given in his name at the state tournament called the
Rollie Williams
Memorial Award. For more on Rollie please click
here |

|
|
|
|
The next
inductee was Terry Huber. Terry was a great slalom skier who started
skiing in Jr. Boys in 1968 who competed against the likes of Bob LaPoint.
Terry tyed Bob's Jr. Boys slalom record, and skied on through the late
1980's. Terry went on to be one of the first to get into the 38 off loop,
and he skied many pro tour tournaments back in the day. To see more
on Terry please click
here.
|
 |
|
The next induction was Jerry Hickman. Jerry grew up in the Syracuse area and got
his skiing interest from the Dewart Lake Skiers. Jerry went on to win many
State, Regional and National Jump titles. Jerry's inspiration was to develop
private ski lakes where the club WSI was formed at Warsaw's
Hidden Lake and later moved to what is now
Cindonway. Jerry also was part responsible for
Camelot
Lake, and then went on to Ft. Wayne and started
Lake Mirage
where he gave ski rides and taought many people the sport of water skiing while
also developing what was the INT League in Indiana. for more on Jerry please

Sawmill's Season Ender
|
At 8:00 AM it's
55 degrees! - steam rolling off the water! - couldn't see the other end of
the lake! - third skier off the dock - YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! But one
couldn't whine since the first skier off the dock was teenage Liz Tynan!
As Liz pulled up, the steam rose off her body as she skied away! It may
have been a cold start but the day blossomed into a picture perfect 70
degree sunny day. Skiers from both out of state and local regulars
enjoyed the smooth waters far into the evening. Skiers and audience both
enjoyed seeing Kim Contos return to skiing his first tournament of 2011
after difficult injurys and also encouraging Nate Smith ski into 41' off.
Those of us on the bank watching the skiers were depressed that this was
the last tournament of the 2011 season but were making plans and setting
goals for next year."

Sawmill Starts The Season With A
Bang
Sawmill
Lake once again showed it's superb hospitality
as the club kicked off the tournament season with excitement. It rained,
it blew, it got hot, it got cold, it calmed, but the variable weather
conditions didn't stop the skiers! The June 18th Sawmill Tournament got
a late start and was interrupted by rain but the skiers enjoyed the
hospitality and great skiing conditions in between showers. Being a
"record capable tournament" there were some spectacular sets. One of
the most interesting runs was by Florida skier Chet Raley, who collided
with a Mallard duck at 6 ball on his 39' off pass! Chet successfully
completed the pass to go on into 41' off skiing through the feathers
around 1 ball from the previous pass. Nate Smith once again proved
himself with a score of 1 at 43 off to match his record setting run from
just a few weeks prior. The local news was out to report the action with
images and interviews from some of the

The First All Electric Ski Nautique
The new Ski Nautique E is on the water running
and it has been a huge positive surprise to everyone. The electric
propulsion system has proven great performance, runs for an
unexpectedly long time, and is fun! The Nautique team has been
working with their friends at LTS Marine
on this boat for some time now but it was just a few weeks ago
that they realized how great a performing boat they have.

New Years Day on The Mississippi
IWSA members Dan Federspill and Dave Jarrett
participated in the Missouri Disabled Water Ski Association's 2011 New
Years Day Polar Bear Water Ski event held at the Arch on the Mississippi
River. Beautiful Sunny Skies and 32 degree temperature brought out
skiers and spectators for this annual fund raiser. Participants
included wakeboarders, water skiers, slalom water skiers, knee boarders,
barefoot skiers, trick skiers, a boat paddle skier, and even a tuber!
Santa Claus (aka Kevin Day) opened the event arriving at the river's
edge to hand out "power drinks" from his bag of goodies. Happy New Year
to all.
