Hi Water Ski Family!
We, the 2019 USA Adaptive Water Ski Team, need to fund our trip to the World Championships in Norway in July. We’re the only country to medal in all 13 Worlds (won 8 of them), the only country to win 4 consecutive Worlds, and the only self funded team among our fiercest competitors. Skiing’s expensive and we know most clubs and skiers don’t have a lot of extra money to contribute to others. So … we came up with a Buoy Buddy Campaign. A Buoy Buddy is a person, club, business, or organization that contributes $1 per team member to help with our Worlds expenses, estimated at $85,000. There are 19 of us on this year’s Team; 14 athletes and 5 volunteer staff. We ask you to be our $19 Buoy Buddy. (Of course we’ll happily accept a donation of any amount:-)) You might not be familiar with our athletes or adaptive skiing (check our website) but I can confidently promise Team USA skiers will make you proud of their athleticism and patriotism! Slalom, tricks & jump - 3 divisions – vision impaired, standing and seated (further classified by level of impairment). Please do check us out (www.usaadaptivewaterski.org/team) and share our Buoy Buddy request with your members, family, and friends. You can donate via the PayPal link on our website or by mailing a check to USA-AWSWS c/o Neva Brett 1155 E Pacheco Blvd, Los Banos, CA 93635. (As a USA-WSWS sports discipline, donations are a charitable contribution. IRS EIN # 59-0841458) We truly appreciate your time and consideration and wish you the absolute best of life! Ski Happy and Expect the Best! Neva (Geneva) Brett, Team Manager

Now comes the news that the lease for the Fairland Ski Club will not be renewed for 2019 Dick and Geri Herr purchased the property in the early 1960's which included a "borrow pit lake" that had supplied dirt for the construction of interstate I-74. They developed this "diamond in the rough" into the Fairland Recreation Center which featured a swimming beach with high dive floating dock, a 2 story water slide, concession stands, miniature golf, batting cage, and camping/RV sites. They also leased the use of the lake to the Fairland Ski Club beginning in the mid 1960's. Numerous water ski events/tournaments were held at the Fairland site including Indiana State Water Ski Championships.
Over the years, use of the site diminished as fewer people used the swimming beach as backyard swimming pools became affordable. The property suffered a devastating blow when construction of a nearby Casino drained the lake for an entire season. A couple years later the property was sold with only the campgrounds and water ski club remaining. It is with great sadness that we witness the end of a fun filled reign for the Fairland Water Ski Club. The hopeful temporary loss of the White River site for the Indy Skier is also of serious concern brings the challenge of searching for other possible water ski sites. An unofficial committee is actively "on the hunt" for an alternate site. Do contact John Kniesly at [email protected] or Phil Mishler at [email protected] with any ideas. |
