Last fall when Neal Clark and Tony Lambert reserved the June 25th date for a "night ski tournament," we all thought that they had entered into the first phases of dementia! The Boonedocks Lake team put on an outstanding event on one of the summer's most pleasant evenings. The first round began at 5:00 PM with all skiers (numerous grassroots and novice skiers) participating. A break in the skiing brought out a terrific supper provide by hosts while tournament workers prepared the shore lights and buoy lighting. Round 2 began at dusk with a skier shooting off roman candles as he skied down the lake. Round 2 continued into the darkness with every skier returning with "ear to ear smiles" on their faces having conquered skiing at night. As midnight arrived, numerous skiers wanted a 3rd round with the boat drivers and judges saying yes yes yes!!! The event wrapped up at approximately 1:30 AM. Adding to this special evening was the appearance of Indiana's own Nate Smith who "cake walked" through 41' off and of course Mother Nature who gave us the perfect clear summer night. Special thanks to Scott Morton and family for providing the site and to Matt Kelly for arranging the stadium lighting. Overheard were conversations about how they would improve the event for next year! At the American Water Ski Association’s mid-winter board meeting last January, the board approved team skiing, an idea created out of the organization’s Special Interest Group Committee. "This is very exciting stuff and we look forward to how this format might spark interest at all levels of skiing and spark attendance at regionals and Nationals," says Jeff Surdej, AWSA president. "Team skiing has proven to be a format that attracts new skiers and retains current skiers, both show skiing and collegiate water skiing are the only sport divisions with growth over the last five years, which is quite an accomplish considering the water ski recession we seem to be in."
Thirty-eight teams from across the nation will compete at regionals for five spots at the 74th GOODE Water Ski National Championships, Aug. 8-13, at Broadside Harbor in Caldwell, Idaho. * The Midwest Region will have one team per state, except that Iowa/Nebraska will be combined into one. * Each team will be made up of five juniors (B/G 1-3), five men (M1-12) and five women (W1-W12) in each of the three events. For example, if one team had all single eventers, the team would have 45 members, the maximum number possible while, if there were only 3-eventers, the team size would be at its minimum of 15. The size of most teams will fall somewhere in between. "A key goal of this exciting new program is to encourage skiers to participate in tournaments in which they would normally not be interested in participating in an effort to make a team, thereby fostering enthusiasm and renewed interest among our members," Surdej says. "Team skiing and competition succeeds in promoting excitement among both competitors and spectators as seen in collegiate tournaments and other team events." Perfect summer weather made the 18th Sawmill Summer Record Tournament a perfect outing for all skiers. Scott Tynan came away with the top score being the only skier to get into 39' off. And believe this.....Scott finally traded in the relic old X-5 for a new D-3 Arc and did quite well on it. Skiers from Ohio, Tennessee, and Minnesota made guest appearances. Several youngsters posted their "PBs" during the event. There was one casualty today.....Megan Lambert hit a flying duck with her front leg on her third round. Megan didn't suffer any injuries.....kept skiing.....duck didn't do so well.....dead duck! Below is each skier's best performance for the day:
The IWSA sponsored Trick Clinic held on June 11th was host to trick skiers aged 9 to 76! Honeymooner Molly Harrison Wright and father Daryl worked together to teach each skier a new trick to add points in competition. While they were driving and coaching, mom Nancy Harrison was operating the food stations with a 6 course breakfast and a 9 course lunch and snacks in between!!! New husband Ronnie Wright did numerous duties to help out and tried out the trick skis for the first time. It was a perfect summer day at Brewski Lake with calm waters for all of the skiers. Next Indiana event is the Sawmill Summer event on June 18th. Great weather blessed the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana Sports Program water ski event on beautiful Morse Reservoir. Numerous individuals took advantage of this annual event to enjoy water skiing. This event began as the brain child of John Kniesly nearly 20 years ago and has evolved into one of the largest and most enjoyable clinic that RHI sponsors. Thanks to a multitude of volunteers and business's who donate food, drinks, boats, and equipment for the 2 day event each June.
