For the second time this summer, Silent Shores enjoyed pristine skiing conditions for the entire day. Skiers aged from 6 to 78 skied the smooth waters behind the Ski Nautique and the Mastercraft. The Silent Shores club members were evident everywhere judging, driving, cooking, diving for lost handles, etc. It was rewarding to see some youngsters and "out of towners" from Illinois and Ohio skiing. Two more tournaments left at Cindonway on September 3rd and 4th and Sawmill on September 16th.

The USA Water Ski Nationals held in Martinsdale, Texas was HOT! The thermometer reached 100 degrees each of the days of the event. ( Oh...but it was "dry heat!") The warm temperatures didn't curb the enthusiasm of all of the skiers and workers as the water conditions were good each day with no weather related delays. A bit of wind on Saturday did affect some skiers. Numerous Hoosiers were there and seen on the podium. Increased attendance at the event made for 12 hour days for both skiers and workers. The San Marcos River Ranch is a very elite complex of 4 ski lakes and the hospitality was super. (the fire ants were something else!) Fun events included a run-off between Nate Smith and Jon Travers and a Saturday night jump off under the lights in which our own Biester Detty placed 5th. Julie Mishler claimed the Girls 1 National Championship returning the Camelot Ski Team to the days of numerous National Champions. It was also a good Nationals for the Sharkey Clan with Jared winning the Mens 2 Tricks National Championship and Cody placing 2nd in Mens 3. Nate Smith continued his slalom dominance by claiming the Open Mens National Championship. Other podium finishers included Julie Mishler (2nd G1 Overall), Brian Detty (M1 3rd Overall ), Don Bucher (M7 5th Jump & Overall), Megan Lambert (W1 5th Slalom), Jill Smith (W3 2nd Tricks), Rhonda Schmitt (W4 4th Tricks), Cheryl Schmitt (W6 2nd Tricks, Jump, & Overall), and Prissy Edwards (W7 3rd Slalom, 5th Tricks, 2nd Jump, & 3rd Overall). Another notable performances was skied by Dave Jarrett with 3 buoys at the 32off loop in his first National appearance. It was also the Coltin Bucher’s first National appearance. In all 25 Indiana skiers competed at this year’s Nationals. Now that Nationals is over, the scorebooks are wiped clean and scoring for the 2018 season begins so........look ahead and sign up for the next tournament being held on August 26th at Silent Shores.  This week is the last week of ski school for 2017. This was our 14th year! We had 130 students this year. It was a 50/50 split of first timers and returning kids. We even had an entire family do a week of ski school...Mom, Dad, and their 3 daughters!

Spectacular weather blessed the 2017 Midwest Regionals and Trophy Lakes in Center City, Minnesota this past weekend. Warm days, cool smooth water, excellent hospitality, and outstanding skiing made for a magical 3 days. Team Indiana made a good showing competing against other mid-west states and numerous Indiana skiers placed on the podium. One of the most exciting events was the duel between Nate Smith and Cale Burdick of Michigan that had all the spectators lining the banks and cheering both skiers on. (Nate and Cale had their skiing carrer beginnings together on Champion Lakes in McCordsville, In.) Midwest Regional Tournament Championships were capture by Coltin Bucher (B1 slalom); Julie Mishler (G1 slalom, tricks, and overall); Kim Contos (M6 slalom); Mark Schmitt (M6 overall); Paul Manning (M7 tricks); Dave Jarrett (M8 slalom); Nate Smith (OM slalom); Jill Smith (W3 tricks); Cheryl Schmitt (W6 tricks, jump, and overall); Prissy Edwards (W7 tricks, jump, and overall). Congratulations to these Champions! The focus for many participants now turns to the Nationals that begin on August 26th in Texas.  The Indiana Water Ski Championships was a record breaking event! Record breaking temperatures hovering near the 100 degree mark and broken state records were the order of the day! Fortunately there was plenty of shade for the spectators and officials and the ability to "cool off" in the 90 degree water helped! The "soft" Timberlake water provided for many state championship records to be broken. Due to technical issues and the large number of skiers, the trick portion of the event had to be delayed until Sunday morning. An early morning thunder storm dumped record amounts of rain causing the lake to rise approximately 1 foot and all the buoys disappeared! The buoys were re-adjusted and the lake cleaned up to finish the event before noon on Sunday. Hats off to all of the Schmitt families and the officials for a record setting event. Men 7 Slalom- John Kniesly 2@38 off Men 9 Slalom- Glen Reid 2@28 off Men 9 Jump - Glen Reid 37' Open Men Slalom - Nate Smith 2@43 off Below are the State Finalist:  After a "dry spell" of several years the IWSA Board of Directors voted to award the Rollie Williams award to Nate Smith. The award is given to individuals who have exhibited and given to the promotion of the sport of water skiing. Not only has Nate promoted the sport world wide by his special talent and records, he has given on the local level by operating junior development clinics the past 2 years at the Indiana State Championships. Nate donated any funds collected at this year's clinic to IWSA for use in future junior development projects. What a super role model for our youngsters.
